"Only our mission for the Führer matters!"

Oberst Herman Dietrich was the Nazi officer in charge of the dig for the Ark of the Covenant in Tanis, Egypt in 1936. He'd been charged with this task by Eidel. Dietrich worked closely with the Frenchman René Belloq on the matter. When the Ark was opened by Belloq later at their island stronghold Geheimhaven near Crete, Dietrich, along with the rest of the Nazis, did not avert his eyes from the power of God. He then died when his head melted. He wore an olive green tie on a white dress shirt, concealed by a dark tan jacket. He wore tan pants and a dark tan cap. Almost the same uniform as Gobler's, but Gobler's uniform is in a different tone of dark tan.

Notes[]

  • In the original script for Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dietrich was named Shliemann. Instead of dying when the Ark is opened, he and several of his men pursued Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood in mine carts, in a sequence cut from the film but recycled for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
  • His first name Herman isn't mentioned in the film and originates from Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Visual Guide.
  • Despite having died in LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, he (like other villains) returns alive without explanation in LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues. This time he survives by simply getting knocked into a barrel just before the boss fight with Belloq.
  • Dietrich was going to be made into an action figure by Hasbro, but the Indiana Jones toy line was cancelled.
  • Wolf Kahler also played an SS Officer named Dietrich.
  • His shoulder boards show the white of infantry, yet the lights on his litzen show the light green of the Gebirgsjager.
  • At one point in the film he is incorrectly referred to as "Herr Major".
  • In a deleted scene, He, major and Gobler are stopped by Sallah during a break. Sallah tossed soup all over their white shirts.
